The Ministry of Science and Technology announced at a news conference in late February that a national major science and technology project for drug innovation has helped China to break foreign companies' monopoly in biopharmaceuticals used in the treatment of lung cancer and leukemia, as well as the prevention and control of drug-resistant bacteria. Domestically developed small molecule drugs for the treatment of cancer have caused overseas patented medicines to fall in price by 50 percent.
