HTC accused of patent infringement by Nichia

2017-07-14

Taipei, July 12 (CNA) Nichia Corp., a Japan-based light-emitting diode (LED) firm, has filed a lawsuit with a court in Germany, accusing Taiwanese smartphone brand HTC Corp. (宏達電) of infringing on its LED patent.

In a statement, Nichia said that it filed a patent infringement lawsuit in Germany at the Düsseldorf District Court on June 29, alleging infringement of its white LED patent by HTC's flagship model -- the HTC U Ultra -- and seeking damages from the Taiwanese firm.

The lawsuit also affects HTC's affiliates -- HTC Europe Co. Ltd. and HTC Germany GmbH -- as well as Digital River Ireland Ltd., which provides e-commerce and operates HTC's European web shop, Nichia said.

Nichia said it is determined to protect its patents and other intellectual property rights, and will take any necessary legal action against alleged infringers in any country where appropriate and necessary.
